This week Topher Mac welcomes back to the show Guest CoHost Graeme Mitchell Taylor and they give us immediate feedback on the new horror movie Leviticus. Did they like it? Only way to find out is to listen! The show starts spoiler free and they announce before they begin giving spoilers.
Alright. Leaving the movie theater, then leaving the gas station. And now we're gonna leave the audience in suspense because they want to know what we think about. Uh oh, that's a car. Yeah. I hit reverse. What do we think?
SPEAKER_01What do we think about cars, man?
SPEAKER_03There we go. Okay. Now that's a cold open. Fayetteville traffic. Dying in the fucking car. Yeah, that's that's that's awesome. Um so. Okay, yes. Here we are. Yes, we're here. And um we just watched Leviticus. Leviticus, yeah. Uh normally I would do some little like fun teaser to get us into it, but I guess dying in a car counts.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, so it's the ghost of Topher and my guest, Graham. Graham, yes, Grand Mitchell Taylor. Woo!
SPEAKER_03Grand Mitchell Taylor. And so from Mac. Yes. You're listening to Shadows that Shine, a movie podcast. And as I just said, we're listening to Leviticus. Um very appropriate for Pride Month. Yeah, that's uh that was one of the things that made me want to watch, but also the uh well, we'll uh I just I just want to get some business out of the way. Yeah, we're gonna do uh box office at the end of the episode. It's just gonna be me doing that because you'll uh be back in the town in which you live. Yes. Uh I, on the other hand, have to handle this. There will be car noises. We are driving, we are driving, and it's not Miss Daisy. We're just driving to have something to do while we do the thing we do. Yes. So we hope you enjoy. Now, as we were just mentioning, very uh appropriate movie for June. Yeah. Poor choice leading into Juneteenth. And Father's Day.
SPEAKER_01This movie, this movie is very white.
SPEAKER_03It's very white. Um it's it's Australian. I can't help it. This is when the movie came out, and I wanted to cover a new movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um wait, actually, Juneteenth.
SPEAKER_01What's today's date? The 18th. Juneteenth is tomorrow. Oh wow, that happened quick.
SPEAKER_03Yep. I thought it was the 17th, not the 19th. Anyways, um, happy Juneteenth! Yes, woo! And when he says tomorrow, he means tomorrow compared to when we're doing this. Yeah, yeah. Obviously, we just walked out of movie theaters Thursday night. Yeah, it's a little past eight. To watch Leviticus. How many times can I say that over? Uh, which I called you after the third time I saw the trailer, and I was like, I didn't call you, but I texted you.
SPEAKER_01You thought, you yeah, you th you thought I would I would be I would be good for the water. What do you decide?
SPEAKER_03It was just like, Graham, I want to cover this to you. I and I did. I thought you'd be the right choice, and I'm really glad that I did after watching the movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Because I'm like, this this movie is uh you know how people say, like, oh man, this movie's crazy. This movie's not crazy, but like, it's good. It's good.
SPEAKER_03I thought I was just about to say, did you think it's good?
SPEAKER_01I think it's good. It it, you know, I will, you know, you said uh like no spoilers. It definitely felt to me like those 90s indies, indie films where they kind of like end on a like a oh we're not doing not doing nine, we're not talking indies.
SPEAKER_03We're at spoiler-free territory for the little bit.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03But I will say this, like the the movie exceeded my expectations. So you thought it was good. I thought it was good, yes. Neither of us are saying great.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I think good is a good place to put it at. Like, it's where you want your horror film to be. Short is not sweet and to the point.
SPEAKER_01Though there's sweetness in the movie. For for a for a for a concept, like for a premise like this, yes. You don't want to go on too long. I I will say this. If you don't like guys kissing each other, might not be the movie for you. We did have a we did have a walkout. Did we really? Yeah, in the front.
SPEAKER_03I didn't notice that, but that makes sense because they seemed ri the guy seemed really homophobic and the girl seemed like it was his daughter.
SPEAKER_01They never came back. It was it like and and I I rem I leaned over to you and I said, I wonder if they'll be back. And they never came back. That's what you meant when you said that.
SPEAKER_02They walked out because um It was right after It was right after they see that's it, yeah.
SPEAKER_03In just a couple of minutes, we'll we'll enter spoiler territory and pick that back up. Oh, right, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_01If we're going like now Okay. So when you say like no spoiler, you mean like oh I mean nothing. Literally nothing. Okay, that's two minutes second to catch on. Okay, I got it, got it.
SPEAKER_03I am I can totally I'm a person I can put together a movie if you give me basically what's in the movie trailer.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'll remember that for next time.
SPEAKER_03And I will say that like I don't think that this movie did because the movie trailer made me think that this was gonna be like a Matthew Shepherd story, uh, R.I.P. And it I don't think that it was. It wasn't a story that I had originally thought it was gonna be. But I actually think what it gave us was better than what I thought it was gonna be.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Now uh you thought it was a good movie, uh, was it relatable? Without getting too into the weeds yet?
SPEAKER_01Um no.
SPEAKER_03It's not related.
SPEAKER_01Um like there are gay people in it, sure, but like I can relate to that part. Okay, but like, no.
SPEAKER_03Just not the dynamics of the things and the stuff and the such.
SPEAKER_01Not personally, no.
SPEAKER_03Alright. Yeah. And then um uh you think other people should watch it?
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, definitely. So do I.
SPEAKER_03Oh, here's what I was gonna say. Outside of the thematicness of being uh uh I think it's fair to say this is a gay culture movie. It is, yes. Now we're horror nerd horror nerds, yes, you and I. Yes, I am fit appropriately into that genre.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03And and is it a good fit in a year that has just super delivered on um on movies in that genre?
SPEAKER_01It's it it is worthy, yeah. It it it is it is worthy to be a part, like it definitely enough for the gay canon, but I think it's also good for horror fans.
SPEAKER_03Fantastic. I agree on all accounts. Yes, yeah. Um, not that I have a vote in the gay canon one, but I still agree on all counts.
SPEAKER_01It is it is definitely one that can go in the gay canon.
SPEAKER_03Like you could totally double feature this with uh, but I'm a cheerleader.
SPEAKER_01Sure. Sure. Yes. Which kind of, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's just, I mean, they're exact opposites in every way. In every way, but like in the best way possible. That's why that's why they're really perfect.
SPEAKER_03If you're listening, the spoiler-free thing is about to end. Yes. Alright. The buffer that you have to hit stop on this fucking thing is I'm gonna ask this man real quick what he thought of very quickly. What did you think of backrooms and what did you think of obsession?
SPEAKER_01I haven't seen them yet. You haven't seen the I know, I know, I'm going to hell, I know.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you want to get you you want to try to get I know, I've heard they're great.
SPEAKER_01They're fantastic.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes, and like I'll tell you what I said on my podcast in case you haven't heard the episode yet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03The beginning of obsession. I'm like sitting there going, I'm gonna fucking hate this.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_03Like, I thought I was gonna like you from the trailer, and then I'm watching, I'm like, just like the actors making choices I would never make, and the acting is way over the top, but not in a fun way, you know, like it's not in a kubecrean way, yeah, it's just a different sort of over the top, and then all of a sudden, at a certain point in the movie, something happens and you just go, I'm all in.
SPEAKER_01Oh god, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_03I'm all in. And for me, that was later than other people. Okay. But at that point, you could not have shaken me from how much I like the movie after it hit a certain point. For me, much deeper into the movie. It was never bad enough to walk out, but it was kind of like, okay, like, what are you doing here? I don't, you know, like can he fucking get to it already? Like, I know every fucking director thinks that every movie needs to be an hour 47 minutes now, but come on, like get to it. How does back row how does backrooms feel faster than obsession?
SPEAKER_01Consider, isn't it like twice the runtime or something?
SPEAKER_03No, they're like the same runtime. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. But I try to go into movies.
SPEAKER_03We've seen backrooms before, right? This the stuff that leads into it. I'm f I'm familiar with not into it, but around it.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, I'm familiar with like the the the backstory, the the internet phenomenon.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well he he paced the movie the same pace, uh roughly the same pace as the YouTube stuff. Oh, I'm like the balls on you to take your time this day and age.
SPEAKER_01But it like but the they really do like increase that tension throughout. You're like, what is going on? It it's like it's crazy how like how scary nothing is. Yeah, well, it's or like you're like it's the not knowing that.
SPEAKER_03The not knowing that movie. And an obsession, it's knowing that I think the tension comes from like the tension comes from like you know we the audience is a screwed up situation. Yeah, but they also do give you an unknown in in that movie very early on that is gonna bother you forever because they don't answer a question that would change like the answer to that question changes everything about how you accept the movie, so you have to project your own opinion onto that movie, and then that that a lot of what happens after that deals in that world of what you thought of it, so it becomes a very unique experience, and that's one of the things I think is the most impressive about what Obsession did. Oh, yeah. So that's enough about two movies you haven't seen. Yes. Now it's time to talk about a movie you did see.
SPEAKER_01I did see this, yes.
SPEAKER_03As we get closer and closer to Cape Fear Regional Theater.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I sat I sat I sat through the whole thing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, sat through all of it, even the shitty trailers.
SPEAKER_01You didn't get all the trailers out there. No, I I I wanted to go in this as blindly as possible.
SPEAKER_03I no, no, I mean the trailers leading up into it. Oh, yeah. I fucking did, and I had to see that god-awful Trump commercial.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, what what was that?
SPEAKER_03Like I said, apparently for the rest of the summer, there's gonna be Trump commercials in in all the movies. Oh, goody. And it's actually like a uh it's a military one, but it's it is very obviously Trump propaganda. And I I love and respect our military. As someone I grew up next, uh, right, I mean touching the fucking base, basically.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, I uh I don't like and I don't want to be political, but like I don't like the politiciz politicization of soldiers. Right. And I don't like that you're over there talking about we're great, department of war, department of war, right after we lost a war. So I think if there's any episode a little bit, if there's any episode where it's safe for me to say these things, it's the one about the gay movie. What about the gay movie? Yes, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01No, that's and now we're back on track. Yeah, we we have a sense of humor.
SPEAKER_03So for those of you who don't know, Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament, yes, uh, which also um covers basically all of the major uh Western religion. Like yeah, oh oh you meant yeah, Leviticus means so it's also law, yeah, and it it does it uh it that means it is also part of the Torah, it's also has some influence in the Quran because it is part of the stuff that they think that you should consider that.
SPEAKER_01The Abrahamic religions, yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_03All of those, this word has significance on that, but uh anyone that was uh consciously aware of the conversation of gay marriage at the time when it was at its fever pitch uh would remember that Leviticus was getting quoted a lot.
SPEAKER_01Yes, Leviticus 1822. It's thou shalt not lie with a man as with a woman, or you will be you will both be put to death, blah blah blah. Which is funny because now that we're in spoiler territory. Yes, yeah. Oh, spoilers. Uh that you know, they you know that's say what you want now. There's a homophobic verse in the Bible, spoilers. Oh, I'm but like, okay, so yeah, so going back to what you're saying, though, with like the double feature with but I'm a cheerleader, uh, conversion therapy. It's all about conversion therapy and how it's gonna have you be gay, let's do something about it.
SPEAKER_03And yeah, both of them to me are horrific.
SPEAKER_01One just dealt with it in comedy, and one of them dealt with it in just the saddest love story, and still, and still, like I I I have said I've said this before, like, but I'm a cheerleader. It's real like it it's funny, it has all but because of how ridiculous it is, it it it's of how ridiculous it is, but if you really like let it sink in, it's very depressing.
SPEAKER_03I think the worst part about that fucking movie is how fucking accurate it is.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like I I mean, come on. Because every every every technique that they use uh is real technique is real, is real thing. They they like they they part of conversion therapy involved like implanting monkey testicles in men. Now that didn't happen in premature, but yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um never heard that, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, look, look it up, it's it's fucked up.
SPEAKER_03Um really makes me think about Chick-fil-A a little differently, right?
SPEAKER_01I know, right?
SPEAKER_03That's the same like bullshit that like is it all of them to do that or just some of them to do that? I know electrotherapy is part of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was a part of it. Um there's the aversion therapy. If you watch um the second season of American Horror Story, where basically they give you they give you this this injection that like it makes you sick when you experience arousal, and they show you like which for movie nerds like me that also is clockwork horn. Yes, and they show and they show you the error the erotic images of what you know basically what you're into, and it just makes you become averse to it. It really makes throwing up a lot more awkward, yeah. Right. Um, it it just it like it makes you puke. Uh sort of a Pavlovian conditioning kind of thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um but this movie shows this is the two most normalized ways of trying to control homosexual thoughts of other people. Religion and also uh peer pressure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Especially with like the the younger character versus the adults.
SPEAKER_03You know, they both kind of go the the I the idea of the um and I will say keeping in theme of most movies this year in this genre, uh there is no good guy. No, there's not one good fucking person. And I I think it's fascinating that this is creeping into these movies where there's even the person you're rooting for, you're kind of okay if they go because they've done something fucked up and horrible. Or they've done something that's really hard to get by. But it's like all these movies lately keep making you go, nobody's perfect. Let's put them through hell. Oh, and they're put through hell in this one, and uh yeah, and it is uh fascinating that they went with the approach of let's treat demons like they're real. Yeah. Because essentially that's what we're dealing with. But that's my one main complaint about this movie, by the way. At no point does the guy ever go, a demon is chasing me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it is about the communication. It's like, oh yeah, what like every time every time his name is name, by the way, like the main character.
SPEAKER_03A little uh lazy on the name.
SPEAKER_01N-A-N-A-I-M. And basically, he's trying to like every time he tries to explain to his mother what's going on, he never flat out says, like, there's a there's a demon, and it takes the shape of this guy that I really, really have a crush on. And it's like, just say that. Yeah, it sounds a lot less crazy than what you're like, it sounds a lot less vague.
SPEAKER_03Like she's really into religion. You might be able to convince her something.
SPEAKER_01Sit sit her down and be like, look, that guy, he's real. He he he has implanted something demonic and it's following me. Like we I like we we are possessed. Like, we are possessed.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's wild. Uh, especially because like she's you know, reminding me of Red State, if you've seen Red State, where it's like the people that believe the shit, first of all, it's like a weird, like subsection, like you can tell it's a very culty church.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And um There had to have been like some references also in this movie to like Hillsong, like that that church that Chris Pratt's part of.
SPEAKER_03Is that what that is? Yeah, and uh like they're you know, they're really anti-gay and uh which is funny because like Chris Pine, uh not Chris Pine, uh Chris uh Pratt is like three degrees away from gay. Not even three degrees, I'd even say two degrees.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. He's he like he gives gay vibe. He he gives Gaston vibes from Beauty in the Basin.
SPEAKER_03Like if I was if I wasn't obsessed with fucking hot funny chicks, then you just know I'd be getting it in the Keister.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That was a classic.
SPEAKER_01Definitely keister, yeah. On Pride Yeah, I never I you know I've never referred to mine as a Keister.
SPEAKER_03That's okay. I I I just keep saying stupid shit all the time.
SPEAKER_01No, the thing is I will now.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, you don't? Oh, yeah, yeah. I like keister though.
SPEAKER_01If yeah, if I if I if I'm enduring an intimate moment and be like, yeah. Give it to me in the keister.
SPEAKER_02Take the keister and KY. I like the literature.
SPEAKER_03It is it is a good tool. So that's what she said.
SPEAKER_01Um so the fucking um Oh yeah, and his his oh, his mom is played by uh Alice from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Oh, is that really who that was? I was the whole time I was like, where the fuck have I seen her before? And I'm like, oh yeah, that's her, that's her, yeah. And and I I just said, you know, if she wasn't a crazy religious zealot, she'd be kind of cute. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03She's got that cute little hair, you know. I a cute little mom bob. I did have to, I do have to admit, I felt like the intimate scenes were a little gratuitous, but I think it's a good thing that it was, because how many times have I watched straight sex done like that on stage, where it's like, no, we're we're really trying to arouse you right now. Yeah. And I think that that's a good technique in film because I think that it makes you care more about the um it makes you care more about the characters.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Um I think I think I I took it as the purpose of that was to it, they're edging you. They come so no punishment. They come so close to like full-on penetration. You know, it's like, ooh, they're so close, but then like everything keeps getting interrupted because of their feelings.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I just knew he was gonna give them a blowjob on that bus.
SPEAKER_01Right. He didn't, he didn't, and ungratefully. His his head was on his shoulder, he was this close. I'm like, yeah, just a little lower, but then like, no, it it delves into it's just a hand job, guys.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, sometimes the hand job's hotter. I don't know, man.
SPEAKER_01No, I get it. No, I get it. There's there's again, uh we said we said like if if if there's a scenario, if if there's something you're into, there is a porn where there's just that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like stepdaughter hand job videos. Oh, yes, that is a thing.
SPEAKER_03I don't, I you know, not not a big fan of the the stepdaughter bullshit. No, I get it. It's fine. I I had a stripper dance on me, and and when she made a comment that made me realize I was the same age as her mom, I ended the dance. Oh, gotcha. I was like, I thought you were older.
SPEAKER_01Um, but but anyway, so you were older, stop. But but anyway, yeah. Um, I also noticed that like a lot of the intimate scenes are in very unsexy places. They're in like this grimy place, like you know, in the opening scene where nobody can say on a bar. I thought that was relatable. That's yeah, I mean it it would be like it it would be if you are deal grappling with your sexuality, dealing with your own.
SPEAKER_03Or if you're doing anything that's sort of you don't want people to see. I want to be away from the normal.
SPEAKER_01Like there was a woman that I was um that isolation is very not sexy.
SPEAKER_03I I was being uh certain degrees of intimate with, and we absolutely like went to the middle of fucking like this is where you die in a horror film.
SPEAKER_01No, I've I've done that too.
SPEAKER_03For sure. And you know, it to me that made it more in, but you're right because you're touching on something where it's like that's how you know how out of the box that they their relationship is. It's not supposed to happen. It's not supposed to happen. They did that thing that I don't know if you relate to when you were younger, where it's like you're sneaking. Off doesn't matter if you're gay or straight. I think this is an experience that most people have had some version of where it's like we have to get away from everyone else. Definitely. Yeah. And exploring an abandoned building sounds like just the right fucking um just the right place to uh do the do.
SPEAKER_01And and then like later on when they did when they when they're when they're doing the freaky stuff on the bus, it's like okay, we're working our way up. It's a little it's it's you know e even the sense that like okay, this is definitely a more public place. But I th but I think that also iterates the fact that like they're more comfortable because they've been chased by this fucking demonic you know presence for an hour.
SPEAKER_03I don't even think that's about they felt more comfortable. I think that that's more like um I would like to ponder on that at some point and go, why was it? I think it's where they were, and I think that they were acknowledging that no one's paying attention to them.
SPEAKER_01And and it's just them, but also they're safe because they're surrounded by people.
SPEAKER_03They're safe because they're surrounded by people. So, you know, maybe that does say some some deeper stuff that might need to be brought up at some point.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um I will say the uh Which by the way, if you don't uh if you don't know, like I mean, we are in spoiler territory. The thing is the the the the the demon thing that keeps chasing them, it c it only comes after you when you're alone. Like if you're completely isolated, the pr it'll it'll just show up and then try to kill you.
SPEAKER_03What did you think about them using fire as the thing to get rid of it? Like I'm used to like my demons having holy water, and they're like, no, this one has to be freaking out about fire.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like the the um, well, first of all, this faith healer uses fire magic, and you notice always Which automatically makes him the fucking devil. And the fact is, did you notice that his arms are all burned? I didn't uh like I did not notice that and and the point is I I noticed right away, first of all, because he has such an interesting face as well. And the thing is he like he lifts up his sleeves right before he uh does the ritual and like out of out of sight, but and he the thing is he's covered in tattoos that's also banned in Leviticus. You're not supposed to get tattoos. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03See, I thought like everything about what's going on, it feels like this is an evil cult. Yeah, and that they're they're and I I think that it's actually kind of brilliant where it's like in what is clearly a pro-gay movie. Like, I think the people behind the movie are pro-gay.
SPEAKER_01It's or it's anti-conversion therapy by being pro-gay, yeah.
SPEAKER_03They're using the extremist, like sort of like a Westboro Baptist type thing. Uh yeah, you people are fucking crazy. Like kind of you didn't you don't understand what this is. It's very blatant. And you're using the tools of the devil to keep your religion going.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_03And that and the and that that or that means you're just as removed from God. You're probably more removed from God. Let's say that, let's say theoretically, that the Leviticus stuff was uh you know supposed to be the law of God, even though Jesus never repeated it. Right. Um let's say that's that's what it is. You're still further away because you're fucking around with demons and shit. That's a that's a Ten Commandment issue. And the and the idea Fucking dudes isn't in the Ten Commandments, right?
SPEAKER_01And the and the ide the idea of it. That's like a parking ticket. Yeah, the the idea that the idea that the faith healer, right? The idea that the faith healer is like burned and covered in it look like it looked like his arms were scarred or something. And the thing the fact the fact that the demon is defeated by fire, like it's weakened by fire, it says to me, like, is is this guy is this number one, is this guy a demon? Like, is this guy demonic? Or on the other hand, has he been dealing with his own bullshit?
SPEAKER_03Oh, you know that he has because everyone has. Yeah, that's also what's interesting is has he been fighting homosexual urges, and then the father running away, the preacher running away. I thought that was fascinating because if I'm not mistaken, what didn't the daughter have like a baby? Like it was like a child.
SPEAKER_01What was that thing about? The baby was baptized or something, yeah. Um oh, was it her? That's what I thought, but maybe I'm wrong. I don't I don't think it was. I think that's what I thought. Yeah, um yeah. Um oh yeah, and there's tons of symbolism, like the the base basically like uh the whole thing about how she's doing the jigsaw puzzle on the table. Yeah. Like she's the one, she she's the one who's scheming to shit like she's like she's probably the most homophobic out of everyone.
SPEAKER_03It's like she's doing something to relax herself, but what she's really doing is bringing forth the demon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she's she's that's how I see it. She's yeah, she she's she has those dark thoughts of her own. She's basically plotting, it's a puzzle. It's coming, her plan is coming together.
SPEAKER_03She ends up doing the the standard edition thing of like I'm gonna blame my problems on you when it's it becomes your fault from into the woods. Which is motherfucker, all of you are at fault. Everyone here, there's not a good person in the bunch of you.
SPEAKER_01Oh, and that oh, I was so pissed off when that it's like the the sister, like was and and the thing is she gained the trust of that of them to manipulate them and then turn on them, and like she was she full-on was gonna fucking hate crime them. That's what she was trying to do.
SPEAKER_03Like, fuck man, but you know, the fucking blonde guy is is uh d'sed up, like real tough sort of Ryan.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, is it Ryan is the with the with that Gen Z broccoli haircut.
SPEAKER_03That is that is accurate, yeah. Uh-oh, red light.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um I'm I'm by the way, I'm not hating on the broccoli haircut. It's just it's it's just it is I'm acknowledging it. It is a thing.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. This is one of the movies where like I'm not distracted by I think the actress is hot, so I was just watching the movie.
SPEAKER_01So I would I was not distracted by by these actors either. Like they're good looking, but I was Were they really? They were good.
SPEAKER_03I'm over there looking at them. I'm like, is that are they supposed to be attractive or are they supposed to look normal? Because they're they look like normal dudes to me.
SPEAKER_01They're attractive. Even if even if they're not your type, you can acknowledge, like, oh yeah, they're they're attractive.
SPEAKER_03One of them looked like a cross between um that uh that douchebag that ruined the the flash and uh Ezra Ezra Miller. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And like Noah Schnapp, the guy from Stranger Things.
SPEAKER_03So you're going for Noah Schnapp. I was gonna say uh McLovin.
SPEAKER_01Okay, okay, okay, okay. Yeah. Um by the way, the Joe Byrd was one of them. I just remember the actors. I just remember that was a fun name. I don't remember.
SPEAKER_03I don't notice how weird they're fucking.
SPEAKER_01I usually is it an Australian thing? I'm glad you said that because I was just about to mention. We forgot to mention this is an Australian film. It is very Australian. Um, even though, even though the opening shot after the title card, it opens up. I I forgot for a second. I thought it was Wyoming because of the fence. It was definitely a Matthew Shepard reference.
SPEAKER_03Whoa, yeah, because the You're talking about after the first kill.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then and then like and then like it opens up and there's a barbed wire fence, which you know. Oh immediately in my head, all I can think about is that poor fucking dude, man. Yeah. He was tied to a few what they were doing when they did that. And a skull. And the skull, it's like there's a skull on the barbed wire fence. I'm like, oh yeah, that this is this is dealing with death. This is yeah, and it's a and it and also it's a decapitated skull. There there is a decapitation in this movie.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's um even beyond that, it's almost like the bones of that it's like a scar of that night. Like way after the fact, we're still dealing with the fact that there are uh there is an ambulance. It's a ambulance. And then what is oh well I'm I'm just doing a U-turn. I just need them to. Oh, okay, okay, I got it.
SPEAKER_02Yep, go ahead, do your thing, do your thing.
SPEAKER_03Well, I really hope that this is not registering in the mics.
SPEAKER_01I mean, yeah, I don't I don't think so.
SPEAKER_03That's air uh that's an Amazon um film interview. Oh, okay. Okay, that's why it's such a large building.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Um, anyway, so and and you just immediately know, but I but I I immediately thought, oh, we're in Wyoming, but then the main character started speaking, and I'm like, oh right, they're Australian. Like you hear their accent, you're like, oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03I thought it was Wyoming too, but that's what I'm saying is like I went into this thinking that they were gonna do that. Now, I also started to have this sneaking suspicion that it was gonna be a story about being uh afraid of being gay. And at first it feels like it's gonna be that story and it becomes something different.
SPEAKER_01And it and it it and like that story, admittedly, it is overdone, but we are still living in a time where it's a story.
SPEAKER_03When I'm saying it, I I mean, I guess I should just say it, because I don't know if I'm ever gonna actually make this story. I want to do a movie where a man is sitting in a room and he's being haunted by images of uh him participating in homosexual uh acts and activities. Yeah, yeah. Because it's this idea of what is homophobia? Like literally the fear of being gay.
SPEAKER_01And yes, it is the fear when people say like like, well, I'm not afraid of gay people, so I don't have I'm not homophobic.
SPEAKER_03I think this is you can be anti-gay and not be afraid of gay. Okay, sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think that's where anti-gay came from, probably. Like, I'm not homophobic, I'm anti-gay.
SPEAKER_03I I mean I've never heard anyone admit to being anti-gay. But it's it's terminology that I've used to differentiate the difference between I'm scared of the feelings that I have, like what happened to Matthew Shepard really was truly homophobia.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And you're you're you're you're literally running from a demon that is that is your sexual desires. And then it fucking kills you.
SPEAKER_03I wanted that to be a movie that I made, and this kind of does that at the beginning of the the first parts of the movie, that's kind of what it is. Yeah. What you just said. It's this demon coming after me. And in my case, it was gonna be like a quite haunting. Yeah, like you're haunted by your feelings that you want to repress.
SPEAKER_01And they it it also like okay, it basically follows this. It practically follows the same rules of it follows. It's it's gay, it follows. This movie is, yeah. Because I've never seen it follow something. It's hilarious. Okay, but it's just it's just the demon is a sexually transmitted disease. Yeah, that's the only difference.
SPEAKER_03Um so so it fits into a family of of film. Yeah, and and you know what one of those numbers is when it comes by.
SPEAKER_01Um it says uh 915. Thank you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03All right, we're in a good place still.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Um, and so basically, um, it follows it, you know, just to go from the whole thing about yes, the demon is super strong, to the fact we're like Oh my god, way strong. In fact, they do.
SPEAKER_02Oh, go ahead.
SPEAKER_01They they have they have to they have to really hammer in the fact that, like, okay, this thing is actually dangerous. It like, what do you mean? It's just a regular guy. It's like, no, this thing can like snap your neck like a twig. Like it's it crush your entire body with one finger.
SPEAKER_03Like, that's how which the way that they did it with neither of them can lift a pipe and then it's picking it up with one with one hand, barely one hand, like it's made of starroam. I mean, I I thought it was a little bit cheesy, but also effective storytelling of, oh no, you're dealing with something extra. Now, what pissed me off is I felt like the demon burning up should have been the end of the demon. Uh, they didn't want to give that to the thing. And I think it's because maybe the filmmaker wanted to say something about, you know, the hate is always gonna be around.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like they didn't they didn't explain homophobia ain't going away, just like racism isn't going away. Yeah, it wasn't yeah, exactly. It wasn't clearly stated why it was fire. Well, no, you're saying the fire, but I'm not even saying that.
SPEAKER_03I'm saying like you offer a suggestion of how to kill it, and then you do the thing you need to do to kill it. You trap it inside of the fire, then you do the false finish, it's a wrestling term, uh, where you make uh you make people think something is gonna be the ending, you make it think that he just killed the real person, and that and that now he's the true monster. But no, he killed the demon, except a few minutes later it's uh a double swerve because the monster both the the broccoli head and the monster are both still alive. Yeah, so it becomes now it's like this guy I didn't see who um directed it, uh, but it almost seems like it's stacking ideas on top of each other, where it's like at first the thing I talked about with the uh being afraid of being gay, then that turns into everyone around you is afraid that you're gay because they think that you're gonna infect everyone else with your gayness. So they were trying to kill your gay out of you. And even even though, like, I think they literally demonize you by giving you a demon.
SPEAKER_01When when meanwhile, they have no fucking idea what they're dealing with, like they like they have no idea, like the whole point about the the adult the adults can't see this thing, like nobody can see this thing. Um no one can see unless it's happening to them. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I mean I think that's a really on the nose, but well hidden on the nose kind of metaphor there.
SPEAKER_01It's it's it's very blatant if you know what to look for.
SPEAKER_03Like if you if you understand the references, like and I do think that him having uh the uh can you Google the name of the director since I'm actually talking about him? I know, but the writer and the director.
SPEAKER_01I I know you were telling me to be able to Google stuff. I don't think I can.
SPEAKER_03Neon production equipped, uh I mean was the production uh not production distribu distribution company behind this. So we have neon to thank for bringing us to town. Yeah, I like I like I like I like your logo. Like I looked at the logo. They do they do a lot of stuff like this ain't their first time releasing something that's in uh gay culture. Right. They they're often the people who bring us Broadway stuff now to the big screen.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_03I'm going the wrong way.
SPEAKER_01Um I'm trying to think of like was this like the Did you find that? No, I I I I'm not able to Google stuff. I don't I don't have limited data because I'm poor.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sorry. But the directors or director of this movie.
SPEAKER_03Which, you know, I guess I'll have to say on the the second half of this when I record later.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um he he is trying, I think, to make a statement of here's one thing that is terrifying about being gay, and here's another thing, and then here's another thing, and then just when you think that you've like worked through all the problems and everything is supposed to go around the right way, and you can have happily ever after with someone, ha, it's like just kidding, guess what? A new horror for you.
SPEAKER_01And now it's like you can't the whole thing is like these characters can never be alone again. Yeah, but I guess though there's a whole thing about where like when you're when you're when your family or your loved one, your church, whoever it is, they don't accept you, you're grieving. It is your grief, and it it's it's no different from grieving any other kind of loss. Yeah, and so the thing is the one thing they tell you when you're grieving or when you're going through trauma or depression or anything, the one thing they tell you is to never isolate yourself, never cut yourself off. That is dangerous, it is absolutely dangerous. Yes, fascinating.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like and all you're I didn't catch that.
SPEAKER_01And so the idea is you are literally left alone with your own feelings, and they will and they will destroy you.
SPEAKER_03That's and your obsession with the thing that you want most is the thing that kills you.
SPEAKER_01That you can't have. But in this, yeah, but in this case, it's like obviously it's like be with the one you're you're you're in love with, be with the one you're attracted to, like be open, let people know.
SPEAKER_03But that's what that's what sort of bothered me about him sitting on the bus and then turning and looking outside and seeing the right.
SPEAKER_01I took that as you know, I I I take it, it's like again, it's only if you're alone you see it, right? I think it was just the fact that everybody else in the bus was asleep at that exact moment. No, that's not the that that rule I think that's why why he's I think that's why he I think that's why he saw it like one last time. Um, you know.
SPEAKER_03Well, first of all, it's to say that it's still there. That's the reason why they showed it. They sort of broke because it shouldn't have been seen.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I mean, I meant I meant I meant in the literal sense, like in the logic of the movie.
SPEAKER_03Even so I do think that it does actually break the logic of the movie a little bit, at least spends it to near break.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03But outside of that, the thing that I'm bothered uh uh by is with the the metaphor of the thing and all that. It's like you're with your dude now, so why is this showing up unless that's him doubting or unless they're showing him in the home that they're leaving? That like maybe the whole home, it's like a pennywise thing where it's like I just can't ever come back to small town America.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I need to ride off into the Australia. It's very easy to get lost. It this story is a very good thing.
SPEAKER_03So it's not a it's not a last thing.
SPEAKER_01This story does feel very American, even though it's an Australian, but I think it's just because we're living it as Americans.
SPEAKER_03Well, I I think it's big of a difference between Aussie culture and American culture. Right. I mean stranger animals.
SPEAKER_01Maybe maybe that's why it was maybe that was the part that was relatable. You asked me if it's relatable. Um the reason why I found it not very relatable is because I didn't really grow up religious. Um my family for the most Yeah, my family for the most part was rather accepting.
SPEAKER_02Mine wasn't.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sorry. It still isn't. Yeah, that that sucks.
SPEAKER_03Um, you know, yeah. I told I told one of my parents at one point, I was like, if I want to suck a dick, I'll suck a dick. I don't care. Y'all are gonna stop fucking bullying me about this shit because I like musical theater, I'm gay. Like, fuck all the way off. Like, I have good taste in in art. That's all that is. Like, I'm sorry, I kind of wish I was gay. My, you know, like a lot of men found me attractive, whereas women are a little more like cautious.
SPEAKER_01I think I think that's I think I think it's the fact that you have you have hair. Like that auto- Oh, I don't know, man. Everybody's gonna differentiate that automatically gives you like like points. I don't uh as I've discovered.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you're talking about hair factor.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03Um, like way back when I worked at I worked at a gay bar in New York City. Yeah, you told yeah, you were talking about um well, yeah, but the public doesn't know this.
SPEAKER_01Uh oh yeah. Uh he worked at a gay bar.
SPEAKER_03You yelled at that and you hurt these poor people's ears and stereos. He worked at a gay bar. There you go. Okay. Um what was I gonna say? Even I didn't do it. I got distracted from that. Oh yeah, uh, I was a bar back.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I don't remember the fucking story now. You just I'm so sorry.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so so you you work okay, you worked at a gay bar at the hair points. I was talking about that being attracted.
SPEAKER_03I was I was still relative to now thin and uh no facial hair, and the guys were still about me. Um I just think that like guys have different expectations than women when it comes to men, and I I just I don't know if someone wants to tell me hey, if you're listening to this and you want to say why Topher Mac can't get uh to tap that back of the women.
SPEAKER_01I I will say I will say probably because I say time that bad. I I will I will I will say this, Topher. The thing is, uh I I remember I knew you back when you were skinnier and had no facial hair.
SPEAKER_03The Johnny Depp era.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I remember that.
SPEAKER_03Knock off Johnny Depp. It was a teammate Johnny Depp.
SPEAKER_01And I will say, you during that era, that's my type.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Now now I look like uh homeless.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're very you're very scruffy. Um I am I'm usually the scruffy one.
SPEAKER_03I'm working on a yeah, I get so I'm working on a uh my comedy special is gonna be turned into a movie now. Okay, and the opening shot, I have to look just awful. So that means I'm miserable as I grow. Like my mustache has never been this long ever. It's your instabial. I hate it so much.
SPEAKER_01It's your instability beard.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, I want to look like the sides of my face have never ever been this long, and my mustache. Has never been this long, and it's because I want to look like absolute misery. So that's and I don't mean ankle break in misery, I mean just the most unhappy person ever. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Because it kind of reflects the real meat. Kind of. But yes, you like I I will say, like, I don't, you know, you're I I will say you're still a good looking guy, but to to but to but to iterate my point, like back then, like you were a cutie patootie. I definitely was like I was definitely like in the younger years. He's definitely cute.
SPEAKER_03I didn't I did marry a Russian model.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's more than I can say.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, you know, she didn't divorce me.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh man. Oh, Russians. All my personal shit is out there in the public. Yeah. But let's sum up the movie part of it before we before I get into preview. Oh, actually, real quick. We've gone back to the movie theater and we're at the parking lot. And does this look like what a parking lot should look like when Toy Story 5 is coming out?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Have you seen it yet?
SPEAKER_02It just fucking came out. I mean, well, I well, yeah, but I mean, like, I chose to watch this as my first movie of the movie.
SPEAKER_01I know that you said it was on your um it was on your list.
SPEAKER_03I wasn't sure if it was before I'm super busy between uh I'm getting ready for that. I'm working on a movie, I'm also working on a uh magic thing, and uh have a couple of other projects, and I have to make enough money to get by. So I have okay, that's yeah, I get it. I'm I'm pushed to my limits. But yeah, there's four movies that are interesting enough to watch that are out right now. Two of them are are gay movies, is uh this one and then uh girls like girls.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03Which I would have much rather watched.
SPEAKER_01But see, I would rather watch that. I mean, okay, I I wouldn't say I'm not saying that like I caught myself. I was like, uh it's not that I would rather watch that than this one. It was a good movie. Yeah, it was a it was a good movie. Yeah, this is a good thing.
SPEAKER_03I didn't see the genre, but like there's something about it that goes very if it's not a horror film, it's at least a drama in a very way um, yeah. Um but then there's also Toy Story 5. Yeah, and then there was uh the new Robin Hood movie.
SPEAKER_01The Death of Robin Hood, yeah, yeah, yeah. Which looks fucking great. I remember I I think I did see that trailer somewhere. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because I hate the Robin Hood story, and I'm over there watching it going, that's okay.
SPEAKER_02I might fuck with this. That's okay.
SPEAKER_03I can fuck with this. Like it has its flaws. Like the King Arthur is a more interesting story. I don't like the King Arthur story. I don't like fantasy, man.
SPEAKER_01Like, I try really hard to like it's not fantasy. I'm not the biggest fantasy.
SPEAKER_03I look like I look like the guy who won't shut up about Lord of the Rings, and the only thing I ever say about it is I don't fucking like these movies.
SPEAKER_01No, you really you really don't I understand. I'm not a big fantasy guy either, but I love medieval stuff. I love medieval history. That's what I think. I like it. Well, you know, that is medieval, yes.
SPEAKER_03It's medieval the same way Marie Antoinette was it's it's it's medieval fan fiction, but like it is good fan fiction, though.
SPEAKER_01Like it night's tale is a good movie. Um Marie Antoinette is. Yeah, Marie, yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_03It always makes me think of my ex-wife.
SPEAKER_01But it's like Marie Antoinette, the the film and uh a Knight's Tale, that those didn't happen, just so you know, it's it's all speculation, none of that happened. It's just it was very uh glamorous, but anyway, so going back to the movie though, um so like I said, it's it's it's a story, like you and like you said too, about it's dealing with demons, it's the idea of like hypocrisy. Also, one thing I just want to talk about, uh the mom. She's very uh frustrating in this movie. But do you love your son or not? I don't I don't get it.
SPEAKER_03I have found that this is a common story, I thought in America, but this is obviously Australia. I think it's a common story of the world of parents that fail fail their uh kids.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And usually it has to do with they can't get their own life together, so they certainly can't help someone else get their life together. You know, I relate to certain aspects of that as someone who had to watch my mom without my dad and how she was not able to uh guide me or even be optimistic for me. Because you have to be optimistic for your kid. Sometimes your kid's not gonna be able to do it during those really uh tumultuous teenage years. You have to be their optimism when they start falling away from it. Because if you don't, they're gonna lean deep into the pessimism, and they're gonna lean deep into it's uh uh running away from things. And and I'm I'm an example of that of someone that like hates myself and thinks nothing ever is gonna work out. I mean, I know deep down is I mean, fuck, I worked on Broadway.
SPEAKER_01I mean, we I mean we wanna we we all want to relate to somebody.
SPEAKER_03It's like join the club, like I mean, you know, I hate myself to an extent as well, but yeah, but you know, I have found uh I thought that she was a great symbol of the kind of mother that needed to exist for the city.
SPEAKER_01Oh, absolutely. The dark the darkest moment in the entire movie, I thought, was that moment when you realize that she is completely brainwashed by this guy, and the fact that the the faith healer also lied to her. Remember when she says, like, I can't help you, whatever this thing is, you can't change it, you can't take it back. He said that shit before he ever Oh no, well, and when when she finally says it though, and when when she says like I can I can't help you, and she turns away and he's like he lied. Like, oh, it's like he's a sharp like basic, basically like he's a bringer of demon and death. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03It was it was a a good um I don't know, like I thought it strengthened the story because it really does say, like, hey parents, if you're not gonna support your kids, and I know some motherfuckers who need to hear that said, listen to this. And I hope they're listening right now. Yeah, if you're not gonna support your fucking kids, even if they do something that you don't fucking vibe with, then you're the villain of that story. You're a failure as a parent. That mom is is uh far more villain than the fucking uh demon slinging preacher douchebag. Yeah, because you know evil people gonna be evil. Yeah, oh but a mother not oh no no but a mother not a mother not embracing her kid's um unconventionality, yeah, man. You you you're the fucking worst. Yeah, and the same with the dads, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, but um sort of to bring bring on to another thing. When remember also, did you notice also I I noticed this right away. Um, when he was doing the ritual, when he kissed the crucifix, it was it was right up, it was right on the dick. Like he was he was blowing that crucifix, he was getting so he was getting very sexual.
SPEAKER_03And it's because he's not a man of God, he's a man of Satan. You could tell that about a lot of stuff that he was doing, you know. Yeah, he's he's a I I full disclosure this sort of information, so it's not surprised. I'm agnostic, but I grew up very Southern Baptist, yeah. And so I I'm aware of what what I believe that religion is supposed to be because you know Southern Baptists really think they fucking know everything. Yeah, yeah. Not that they do, but they think that they do. At times. Um, but I mean, even other religions you sort of see what is and isn't acceptable behavior. And that that man is walking around, uh, he's a uh wolf in sheep's clothes, but so was the preacher at the beginning. Like you saw that he was not a man that was meant to shepherd the people.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, and I I think this was very purposeful too. Um the the guy who like okay, the the the faith healer guy, the the fake guy, he's also very he's also one of those guys who's very attractive. Like he's he's a stereotypical daddy.
SPEAKER_03Did you notice the gay mannerisms he was giving off?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03The way he was doing his hands so deep in the fucking closet. Yeah, and the the way he was placing his hands on the two guys, I'm just like like we we're in the south, and I grew up in the south, even though I went up north for a while. And so we're very exposed to men that present straight and are so uh deep in that closet that it makes the in the closet episode South Park look like easy mode of getting someone out of a closet.
SPEAKER_01And you know what I just realized too? Uh when when they when they fall on the ground convulsing, why is their vomit white?
SPEAKER_03Um did you notice did you notice that? Well, I mean, sometimes vomit's white, uh, but also that's what they're going for. No, it's not sometimes vomit's white.
SPEAKER_01And yeah, it's like that that became a sauce, man.
SPEAKER_03I just can't get enough of the cream sauce.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but you wouldn't have.
SPEAKER_02Is that not Meg?
SPEAKER_03Sorry, okay. Go ahead. On that note, I think uh we're gonna wrap up our Leviticus conversation. It's good. Always a pleasure to have you uh join us. Yes, thank you. Um was good. And I look forward to we have a number of uh spooky season is creeping upon us. Yeah, you missed the trailer to Ice Cream Man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay. Oh, that you're gonna have somebody on for ice cream for the original ice cream man? No, it's being remade.
SPEAKER_03I know, but like like, you know, oh I mean like I know I've never seen it and I don't know where to find it, so I'm not gonna be able to cover it until those things happen.
SPEAKER_01It is on YouTube. Well, send me the link. Or it's either YouTube. It's definitely I think it's on YouTube.
SPEAKER_03I want to c I might want to cover the regular version, like the version that's coming out now. Except I did not like the trailer.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I haven't seen it.
SPEAKER_03It seems cheesy in the wrong way. It doesn't seem like Keller Clowns from Out of Space cheesy. It seems like cheesy is in someone had a really good idea that they that they surrounded with a lot of really bad ideas.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And like when you when you go home and you watch that trailer, you're gonna see what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_01Okay, um, because it it's on I forgot the original one is on to be.
SPEAKER_03If you to be or not to be. To be to be that is the question.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03That was one of my stand-up jokes.
SPEAKER_01Oh really?
SPEAKER_03I can't remember what the the whole joke of it was, but I I would go, uh, to be or not to be, that is the question. You know what? I think I'll stick with Netflix.
SPEAKER_01Ha ha ha.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's good, that's good. Okay, but anyway. Except now I wouldn't, because I like never did you see that? So we're done with Leviticus for a second, but did you see that shit where uh Netflix decided officially that they're basically a TV TV with extra steps now? Because they said we will never work with somebody that wants to work in uh release in a movie theater again. We are never gonna do any of that. We're not gonna do physical media, we're not gonna do uh cinema. We are not interested in working with any filmmaker that makes these demands. It will not happen. We're done.
SPEAKER_01Netflix, never forget where you came from. We ordered physical media in the mail. Don't you don't you bullshit with us?
SPEAKER_03They at the end of the day, I think that Netflix has officially accepted their role as a television company. They're their product is watched on televisions and smartphones, they're a television company. Their movies are made for TV movies. I don't think that they should be eligible for Oscars because of that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, they have Gerald's game. Oh, too bad.
SPEAKER_03Well, I mean, that wasn't the case before. And I know that's and they're still gonna try to get movies to go across that because the Academy does so many weird fucking rules now that I don't think, and I've said this uh publicly before, I don't think that the Academy means anything anymore because they've watered down all their rules. Yeah, and they've made weird like things where it's like it's not the best movie released in the cinema because now you have to check like 10 fucking boxes, uh like the diversity boxes and stuff like that. And I'm like, I'm very big on diversity, I always have been, but I that should not be a fucking factor if we're talking about best. It shouldn't matter. Yeah, I get what you're trying to do, and you're not the people that are supposed to be doing it. The unions or the studios, those are the people that should be doing that. I would say the creatives, but honestly, you have to deal with what's around you. Yeah, you know, when when my movie happens, I desperately want uh the movie that I'm throwing all this out for. I want my two female leads to be mixed actresses.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like black and uh I'm looking for a black and Asian actress, and I'm looking for a black and white actress. And you know, there's there's leniency about what that needs to be. But I'm not gonna find that in this area. No, you have to deal with what you have. So it's there's a chance I'm gonna have the whitest film ever, and I'm gonna be sad about it. Because it's not what I want. And uh what if I made a masterpiece and then I said, well, you're not allowed to you know, everybody working in a movie is white. Well, I mean, first of all, that wouldn't be true, but because all my camera operators were black. Yeah. Um I don't know, I'm going way too deep into the weeds on this one. All the insider information y'all are getting right now.
SPEAKER_01This this that that would definitely be for like a non like you know, review related sort of podcast.
SPEAKER_03The last few weeks, if you've seen, I've been talking more about and it's because stuff. Yeah, I'm getting really fucking temperamental about the industry. And I don't have time to watch as many movies as I would prefer to. But the downer, you know, AMC is shit in the bed. Yeah. I've said this before and I'll say it again. I think that Hollywood needs to buy AMC the same way that they had Hulu as like a joint thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I think that the the major studios, the major film studios need to create a company to buy out AMC because it's the only thing that's gonna save the megaplex. I mean the multiplex.
SPEAKER_01They are the they are the they are the iC to their slash puppy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Did you see that uh Roku's being bought by Fox? Like shitty Fox, not 20th century Fox.
SPEAKER_00No. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Uh because I um I mean I don't know what's gonna happen, but like rumor had it, poor Tophra Mac, like my comedy special slash might end up being a movie.
unknownIt's gonna be a movie.
SPEAKER_03Shameless play. Um rumor had had it that that was gonna be on a Roku channel. Now I'm like, Do I want my stuff run by Fox? You're gonna have to give me lots of money, cause I don't want anything to do with that propaganda wing. And we know you have money. I'm serious, like I I I would turn down Paramount. I would uh depending on what the project was, I would turn down Netflix. Uh Universal's been doing really uh respectable things. Too bad that their movies are not I mean they're about to crush, they're gonna have the number one movie of the year. Which one? Odyssey.
SPEAKER_01Oh the Odyssey, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean I did see that trailer. It played before Scary Movie Six. Oh my god. Are you excited about that? Um these are called Southern Goodbyes. Yes, oh yeah, they they go on about about uh 12 times longer than they're supposed to.
SPEAKER_03You just were real hesitant about what I've been looking forward to for four years. I know, I'm sorry. It's not been four years, it's been I think.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I mean again, like as a fan of ancient history and ancient mythos and things like that, like yeah, like yeah, I want to see it.
SPEAKER_03Someone brought up some complaints, and then I'm just like when they did, I was like, look, has Christopher Nolan failed us yet? No, no, he hasn't. Has he picked a strange project that I'm not super excited about? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But has he failed us yet? No matter, yeah, no matter how you feel about the guy, no, he has not failed.
SPEAKER_03I trust the man. Plus, I get a look at Lapita Nyonga's beautiful face for a few minutes on screen. Oh, yeah, she's she's Helen Troy, right?
unknownOh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. She's pretty. I love her. She's great. And then we get Tom Holland, and then two weeks later, we get Tom Holland again with the new Spider-Man movie. Has he done a nude scene yet? Um I haven't noticed. I think so. I'll have to look that up. Okay, so we're both excited about Tom Holland for totally different reasons.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. His butt in that Spider-Man suit. Yes.
SPEAKER_03You're being loud. People have radios.
SPEAKER_01His butt in that Spider-Man suit. Sorry, I'm sorry. It is buttons gross. This mic is very you're gross. This mic is very cute. I am gross. Hey, hey, hey. Any any any backlash. I was just drooling over little Peter the Hogan. So I'm not fucking. Yeah, any backlash, any backlash to anything gay during Pride Month is a hate crime. You should know. You should know this. It's all over the internet. Oh anyway, so yeah. On a more positive note, let's try to end it a little a little confident.
SPEAKER_02It was a bad thing this month. I couldn't help it. I like South Park so much. It's a good note.
SPEAKER_01Oh, what is it? I'm not just sure. I made JB positive.
SPEAKER_02That's a good thing. That's a good way to end a few seconds.
SPEAKER_01Yes, happy pride, happy pride.
SPEAKER_03Please be safe. Don't go away right after this break. Here's what's going on. I'm gonna be given uh the box office in super super rapid fire, kind of like I did last week. Um, and then I'm also gonna do a little preview of what's coming up. Uh spoiler alert, uh, I already know super growth, one of them.
SPEAKER_01Oh, got it. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Okay, got my tickets to that.
SPEAKER_01All right, well, all right, well, I will leave you to it then. Yeah, well, thanks for joining us, ladies and gentlemen.
SPEAKER_03Uh you can catch him on the social medias. Yes. Give us your insta uh Instagram or Facebook that you use publicly if I have one.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, yes, I do. It's just find my name, Graham Mitchell Taylor or Graham and Taylor on Facebook, and then you can find uh all my I have Instagram.
SPEAKER_03He does not have Instagram. I tried tagging him in posts.
SPEAKER_02I do. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03You don't follow Shadows That Shine. I'm so so oh my god, I gotta do that when I get home.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I do have I do have Instagram. I do, I do.
SPEAKER_03And he'll be tagged in this episode on Instagram. That's at Shadows That Shine. I'm Topher Mac. I am at Topher TV. Uh you can see me uh fell to make anything good on Topher House. That's my YouTube channel. Uh I mean I don't think everything's bad on there. It's just not uh I am subscribed to that. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Have you noticed nothing's come out since September 3rd?
SPEAKER_01I would have yeah, I feel like I would have seen something. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So nothing's come out. Yeah. Rumor has it something will come uh pretty soon, but I I've been hyper focused on trying to get this magic show up and running. Um presto changer kind of bullshit. RT really wants to do it, so okay. All right, thank you very much. Uh don't turn off the podcast, but say goodbye to our man Graham Mitchell Taylor. Bye-bye. Alright, I won't say my bye yet. Oh, okay. All right. You're listening to Shadows That Shine, a movie podcast. And we're back. Was that fabulous enough for you? And we're back. There we go. That's a little more fabulous. Hey, what's up everybody? Toper Mac here. It's been a few days since the recording that you just heard. Um, we are still on this episode talking uh we we just got done talking about Leviticus, and now it's time to tell you about those weekend box office numbers. What did it look like? Hmm on the weekend. Who do you think? Well, by now you know, I'm sure, that Toy Story 5 made $160 million. It's not bad, right? Not too shabby. Uh their actual worldwide total was 312 after they added 152 million internationally. And uh second place was disclosure day. Still hanging in there, doing better than um better than I expected. Their total Added this week, excuse me, this weekend 17 million dollars. Not not glorious numbers, but it does bring their total domestically to uh 78.3 million international uh stronger performance internationally with 82.2 for a total of 160.4 million dollars. Um of course uh that was for Universal Pictures Walt Disney Studios bringing in for uh for Toy Story 5 in fifth place. Obsession is the obsession of the year, 14.2 more million dollars to it. Now I imagine these numbers are gonna drop off pretty soon because it's about to be released on digital, but in the meantime, it has managed to bring in an astounding 215.8 million dollars domestically, 117.4 internationally for a worldwide total so far of 333 million point two no point three. You know, you would have thought I'd have said that right. 333. That's that's a sexy number. Focus features is loving that decision to buy up that movie, and uh then we have our fourth place backrooms 7.3 million dollars over the weekend added. Their total is also astounding, 175.2 million domestically internationally. It's a little bit weaker with a 97.5 million for a total of 272.7 million dollars coming in for a twenty four, and in fifth place, was it one of these new movies like Leviticus? Maybe no, no, it wasn't. It was scary movie bringing in another 6.7 million dollars for Paramount Pictures. That brings their total to 97.6 million domestically, 104.4 internationally for a worldwide total of 201. Did I say 201? I meant 202 million dollars. Now, that means that the June 19th to 21st weekend was up 82.1 percent over the weekend to before. This is an astounding jump up. A lot of people going to the movies this week. Uh, I don't think it's a coincidence that it was ridiculously hot. Uh, normally you don't see such close uh numbers for you know after the drop-off with five. I decided to make note today because you got Masters of the Universe at six, which I heard they've already just doubled down on it and said we're gonna green light a sequel anyways, even though you know over the weekend they only brought in another 5.5 million for them. Star Wars and Grogu, uh Mandalorian and Grogu, sorry, uh 3.9 million. They're also down, but you know, that's when you get into 8th and 9th place, which was two of the new movies this weekend. Strong performances for for such uh for Leviticus, 2.7 million dollars for that. Death of Robin Hood, ooh, that was low, 2.6 for that one. Uh, not what you want to see, not what you want to see. A24. Luckily, they made a lot of money with um their opponents. 10th place, Michael, girls like girls did even uh worse with 1.6. So, you know, that's what we're looking at there. That's what we synced, that's what we got. And uh, oh, that's an interesting picture. You know what? I'm gonna use that picture to advertise today. I accidentally took a photograph and I like it, so I'm gonna use it for uh for the promo for this because once again Graham and I did not get a photograph together. I keep forgetting to take a picture of this man. Um fact of the matter is um Leviticus was it's been a few days and I still think it was a very solid movie. I think you should go see it. I did not see any of the other movies that came out. Uh I will, I've already got my tickets to Superman. Uh I'm sorry, Supergirl, because I liked Superman so much. I'm being hopeful. Uh additionally, coming out this week is Jackass for uh best and last. I'm very much looking forward to that film because sometimes watching something absolutely stupid is the way to go. And that's what I want from it. I I just want stupid, ridiculous, and uh fun. So we'll see how it all turns out. You know, I want to thank each and every one of y'all for listening, and we'll be back again next Wednesday, Shadows That Shine. You know, look us up on Instagram at Shadows That Shine, look us up on Facebook, Shadows That Shine. We're on all these places. You can look me up. I'm Topher Mac at TopherTV. And I believe that'll do it. I've consumed enough of your time. I'm Topher Mack. This is Shadows That Shine, a movie podcast.
SPEAKER_02Bye.
SPEAKER_03Oh. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. After credits, after credits. I forgot to tell you, I watched some interesting movies. We'll talk about it next time. Okay, this is Ferrell now this time. Bye.
