A super short episode this week due to a combination of factors.. but we still got your coming attractions and box office results as well as a brief taste of what Topher Mac has been watching.

Hello, hello. What's up, everybody? My name is Tophra Mac. Welcome to Shadows That Shine, a movie podcast. Um, so this week we're gonna do kind of a mini episode. Uh, aside from it being a holiday, which uh a holiday weekend, which it was, I'm beat. I'm not doing well, I've been sick a lot lately, um, and a lot of things are going on, but also, you know, I'm just very excited about this month. The the movie of the year is dropping for me later this month, and I wanted to put some extra attention into preparing for next week's episode, uh, which will um which is actually gonna be the uh movie called Following. It is a crit is Christopher Nolan's first feature film. So that's what we're gonna do next week. But this week, there's a few things for me to talk about, a few little chit-chat things, and where I want to start is what I've been watching this week. Uh I revisited Marie Antoinette, the 2006 film by Sophia Coppola. It was four stars, that's what I gave it, four out of five stars. And and of course, I like that movie a lot. It reminds me of somebody that was very special to me. I only saw the movie for the first time, I think last year, maybe the year before. Uh, I've only seen it once before now. Holds up, very good movie, very well made. Um, then I watched Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. It's only my second time watching that 1989 classic. I gave it three and a half stars. It's not a bad movie, it's just not connecting with me the way that it probably connects with anyone that just got mad at me for saying that. Uh my 4th of July film, what I decided to watch for the holidays was Jaws. It was almost what I covered this week. Decided not to, ultimately. But I went with a four-star for that. I liked that movie. And then, you know, on the 5th, I decided to watch Married to the Mob, 2.5 stars, is all I gave that. You know, I'm probably being a little bit harsh on it. Now, I also watched uh Jaws was a rewatch, by the way. Uh and Jaws, I keep teetering between four stars and four and a half stars, just so you know. Anyways, back to Mary to the Mob. The director of Mary to the Mob is the same director as Silence of the Lambs, which I also re-watched in the last few days. But I didn't put it on this app, and I don't want to say what I want to rate it. It is an incredible movie, and I have strong feelings about it, but I have to sit with it before I decide what score I'm gonna give to it. Um I probably will I probably will cover that this spooky season. Spooky season is gonna be a big deal with me um and this podcast. So get ready for that. To me, the preambles of the spooky season starts in August. Once the first um spirit uh store opens up, I I consider that the beginning of the spooky season. Uh, but by September, definitely. So September and October is going to be balls to the walls with the scares, uh, or the things that are supposed to scare but just are enjoyable to watch. Alright, so that's that's kind of what I was watching this week. Um, I did want to get into before I get into what's next week, let's talk about how this past weekend went. And it was July 3rd to the 5th, so it also covered the holiday. So it was a holiday weekend. We got our top five. First up, minions and monsters, which I'm thinking about watching, even though I don't I'm not a big animation guy, I'm also not a big despicable me guy. But Trey Parker uh is one of my favorite directors, and he's in it. Uh George Lucas, legendary director, he's in it. Both of them giving voice uh work. And you know, it kind of seems fun and silly, and it's about movies. And I love movies, so yeah, a movie about a movie is a genre that I I definitely vibe with. Anyways, minions and monsters brought in $36.4 million over the weekend. Now, totaled up with everything that it was doing, that has given it a $61.4 uh million dollar gross so far. 98.4 international for a total of $159.9 million dollars that's brought in so far for Universal Pictures. It it released on July 1st. That's why it's such a big jump in a number there. Uh moving on. Next, we have Toy Story adding $31 million to Disney's bottom line, Walt Disney uh Studios Motion Pictures. That brings its domestic totals to 366.3 million, 398 international for a total of 764.3 million dollars. Um I'm I'm gonna go with that's a hit, like it's doing very well. Young Washington was third place. That's a an angel uh release, uh, angel films, I think. Uh 20.8 million dollars it brought in. Now I'm not sure when they do their statistics for 20.8 if they're including they have some sort of special weird gimmick. I don't want to get into it because they haven't sponsored me, but they have some thing that they kind of give away some of their tickets, and I have not been able to find out if Angel uh includes those giveaways as buyouts to fluff up their grosses. So I don't know. I'm curious to know if that's the case. Uh but that's all it brought in. Nobody in the world wanted to watch this movie, apparently, except for Americans. Fourth place, Supergirl, drop down big time, only brought in 9.6 million dollars over the weekend. That brings its domestic total to 58.5, its international total is 42. It's uh it's not doing well for Warner Brothers at a hundred and one hundred point five million dollars. And that's rough. Speaking of underperforming movies, fifth place, disclosure day brought in six million dollars. And six million dollars was brought in for uh again universal pictures here, uh, 105.3 million domestic, 111.2 million for a total of 216.6 million dollars. And you know, I think that that's uh a decent place to be sitting at considering it uh it wasn't a huge success. I've heard a lot of mixed feelings. I haven't been able to go to movie theater because of you know, again, I've been sick, I've been busy, I've you know, a lot of personal things in my life have been going on that have prevented me from uh being the movie consumer I want to be right now. Uh but I mean I'd like to see what it's doing. Anyways, July 3rd through the 5th. I I got sidetracked on that. I don't remember what point I was trying to make. Whoopsies. Uh July 3rd through 5th, the overall gross 119.6 million dollars, down 23.4% from the week before. So an even bigger drop. But you know what? All these drops, not worried about because we know we're just we're probably gonna have a strong week this week, and then the week after that, we're gonna have a hella strong of a week. Now, why is this uh week gonna be a strong one? I'm gonna tell you why. Uh a number of movies coming out this week that may or may not hit with audiences. Uh I even though it's third listed on IMDb, I'm listing it first. Evil Dead Burn. I think it's gonna do some numbers. The Evil Dead franchise is beloved. We I also had tried to get John Paul Edmondson on to cover Evil Dead this week to drum up some excitement for Evil Dead. He was busy, and I'm happy that he's busy. You should go to his social medias, you should see where he's performing, you should check him out. I think the man is hilarious. I also think his uh podcast partner, Zach uh Zach Blackfire, also very, very funny. You gotta find him on the socials, you gotta see what he's up to. They have a competing uh podcast. I mean, it's sort of competing because they do stand-up comedy, we do movies, but they talk about a wide variety of subjects. That's Zach and JP's burnout hijinks. I think it's worth checking out. Um now I say Evil Dead would have been the way to go covering that this week. He was busy. Evil Dead Burn. The reason why I wanted to cover Evil Dead is because I think Evil Dead Burn is gonna do really good numbers this week. That's that's who I don't know if they're gonna win the weekend because there's to me the it should do well, but I don't think it'll do well. Movie of the weekend is gonna be Mona. That's the live action version of Mona for Disney. Now it's either gonna clean up or it's gonna crash. I don't feel like it's gonna do mid-ground. I kind of think it'll do what Disclosure Day did, if I'm being honest, because I people were not clamoring for this, and the movie looks ugly, and I think The Rock has lost significant star power. If we were talking about in wrestling terms, I think the rock went from main event to lower mid-card. Like you're you're not upset that he's there, but you're not you didn't show up for him. He's not who you're buying tickets for. The problem with this movie is I never saw the animated version. I know it has a huge following, but it's so recent, I don't know how they just if uh how they justify making a live-action version of it other than people like Mona. Well, we're gonna see how much they like it. Will it overtake Toy Story 5 or what? I mean, family films have been doing very good this year, so just based on that, I think it'll do at least alright. But I kind of expect that it's gonna do weak numbers. Like, I don't, it doesn't seem like the movie to go to. Another movie that is uh the highest uh listed movie on IMDb's uh coming to theaters is called The Invite. It is a Seth Rogan, Olivia Wilde, uh Penelope Cruise, and Edward Norton movie about you know, some people try and uh consider being in the pineapple club, if you know what I'm talking about. You know, uh they're thinking about getting freaky deaky with some friends. It's uh supposed to be like an awkward comedy. I don't have any interest in this movie. The trailer did not impress me, it ain't about me, so we'll see. We'll see. Uh Gail Doty and the Celebrity Sex Pass is also coming out. Um I don't know much about it, except that John Hamm's in it. I haven't heard much about it, but you know, maybe it's it's a David Wayne is a director who I've never heard of, who is directing this, but has done oh he did role models. Oh, so that might be a good movie, that might be a good movie worth checking out. So that's one of the comedies coming out. So if you're looking for a laugh, there's also Night Nurse, which sounds like the name of a porn, I'm not gonna lie. Uh and based on what I'm reading here, it does seem like that's what they're going. A series of perverse scam calls unsettles an ideal idyllic retirement community. A starry-eyed nurse becomes entangled, blah blah blah blah blah. I'm pretty sure this is of the horror genre. Um I don't know, like maybe the there are user reviews for it already, and I'm not hearing good things about it. Of course, I'm only looking at IMDB for this because they failed to get my attention ahead of time. Evil Dead Burn did get my attention ahead of time. It looks great. I think it'll do well. I think Mona will uh just because of the name recognition. Of course, we're two weeks away. Or I guess technically a week away from the Odyssey. That'll be July 17th. I'm going to see it July 16th. I'm strongly considering doing two episodes next week. So don't feel bad if you feel like this podcast is too short for you. Because I want to go see the Odyssey. I'm not really interested in anything else that they're trying to put up against it. Should be a good time. I have seen that they've filled in the release schedule around the Odyssey, adding some things that weren't there before. Uh we'll cover that next week though. Now, you know, I think Evil Dead Burn, the that hall pass thing. It was a long convoluted title, but I think Sex Pass or Hall Pass is in the name of it. That'll be worth checking out. So that's what's going on. Uh I didn't want to skip a week. I could have. Uh, you know. I I like updating my uh box office, giving you my opinion on that. You know, I am a little bit surprised at the numbers this weekend in the box office. But I'm not because it's not like they gave you much to clamor to see. Maybe that's a strategy. Maybe uh if I went back and I looked, I would be willing to bet the last few uh 4th of July's have been weak movie-wise. And you know, the assumption is people want to be out drilling, having a barbecue, they want to go watch some fireworks. I did not watch fireworks for the first time ever this year. Uh, you know, but a few days ago I watched the Patriot, so I did something to acknowledge the 250th birthday of this country, and now I'm acknowledging it again. Uh on the tail end of the Independence Day celebration. Uh I had a friend write me and say that they broke up with their longtime partner, and I thought that that was a funny thing to do on Independence Day. Yeah, yeah, that's I guess the way to do it, huh? Well, ladies and gentlemen, I'm not gonna hold you here forever. Um he she's them's all the all the gambit, uh, all the all the group. Oh, one other thing I wanted to add before I go. A rumor is afoot that they might release Avengers a week early so that they can get some iMac screens. I'm curious to see what happens with that. And uh I'll keep you updated when I know something officially. So I will catch you next week. It's gonna be a uh big episode as we cover my one of my favorite living directors. I think he's one of the best people to ever do it, Christopher Nolan. We're not gonna do a big career retrospective, we're just gonna start with his first movie, the following. And then make sure you go watch the Odyssey because the following week, we it's either gonna be that weekend or the following week. We are gonna cover the Odyssey. And I haven't decided exactly how I want to handle that yet, but I'm I'm definitely gonna do an episode on the Odyssey. Maybe I have someone with me, maybe I don't. That's all in talks right now. Well, that bonus episode is now lost media. Unfortunately, there was a technical issue, it doesn't exist anymore. I don't um I mean, really, it was just us saying our socials. Of course, uh, I follow uh we follow him at Shadows That Shine, which I have to make sure that that's the case by the time you've heard this. And you can find him that way in Adam. Uh, we you know wrapped up the conversation, the awkwardness of how I say the word uh digger and how awful it sounds. It sounds so bad out of my mouth for some reason. And we had a good laugh about that. And that laugh went on for several minutes, which is how we ended up getting cut off.
